The Consumer Electronics Show (C.E.S.) was held in Las Vegas January 7th through the 10th. The C.E.S., the world’s largest consumer technology show, is the platform by which electronic companies reveal their new devices to various industry representatives. One of the highlights this year, 3-D television, has attracted a lot of buzz from the electronics industry. Its amazing how rapidly television has changed in the less than 100 years since its invention. They were once bulky devices housed in cabinets. Nowadays, they come in slim models that can be mounted on walls and even ceilings. 3-D television will breathe new life into the way people experience their favorite shows and interact with video games. Don’t be fooled though, in order to enjoy this new innovation one must use 3-D glasses. A small sacrifice for the luxury. The ESPN network will start broadcasting in 3-D at the World Cup in June. Only the 5 people in the world who will have access to television’s next generation by then will see it. But hey, its a start.

Another big revelation at the show this year were the tablet PCs with touch-screens. Consumers are tired of the old, bulky, 3 part computer system; they want a fresh, thin, alternative that allows direct interaction. Almost every computer company this year who showed up to C.E.S. had a tablet PC to show. One tablet PC that was particularly outstanding was the Lenovo Ideapad U1 Hybrid Notebook and Tablet. Essentially, this is a 2 piece product. As a tablet, it has an 11.6 inch screen runs off of a Linux Operating System, a 1ghz Snap Dragon processor, and 16gb of memory. That’s not all boys and girls, because it also comes with a base, that when inserted (insert Transformer sound effect here) turns into a notebook that runs Windows 7! If that wasn’t enough, it has a dual core processor and it’s all for under 4 pounds in the UK or $1000 American. There’s only one company that can potentially outdo Lenovo; Apple. Ever the opportunist, Apple who was absent from C.E.S. will sometime soon, (end of January?) reveal its own tablet. Apple hasn’t disclosed much information on this. The buzz on the internet is that this device may have been dubbed the “iSlate”
