BeNeAtH the sUrFaCe Photography Show
Art, Events — By JGM Staff on June 29, 2010 at 9:53 amBeneath the Surface is a collection of black & white and color photographs inspired by European cities and Burns’ home, New York City. Although varied in subject matter—from carnivalesque scenes to vanishing points—Beneath the Surface tells a story of curiosity.
A New Yorker by way of LA and the UK, Burns’ affinity toward capturing a city’s dark side began in London—her photos taken as an ex-pat depict lonely roamers in red light districts and curious shadow play unearthed from Parisian subway passageways.
When Burns moved to New York City from Los Angeles, it was the first time she saw smoke rising from the city’s depths. Steamy street photos, such as “Time Warp,” capture her intrigue into a grimy—yet beautiful—city that hides nothing; its imperfections are a testament to its notorious, raw character.
Burns, a naturalist when it comes to photography, prides herself on not Photoshopping images unless it’s for something ultra-dramatic. Her photojournalism classes at London’s American International University trained her to “get it right the first time,” a motto she has since stuck by.
