Welcome to the rise of a new breed of nothing the less than the best in denim. A Canadian based brand is creeping to the USA with their official pair of Japanese inspired Denim cuts and raw material mixed into these tough jeans. Naked and Famous is a company committed to producing only the best and boldest quality denim in the world by bringing to it new styles and textures. When a company creates unique names like Slimguy, Weirdguy, and Skinnyguy, to describe their sizes it definitely becomes something worthy of investigating. In order to get the naked truth we asked owner Brandon Svarc to bare all about the ideas behind his company, presenting the first-ever made 32oz selvedge denim and 10% stainless steel threaded denim, and how he feels about his current success.
JGM: So what made you want to produce the hardest and heaviest pair of 32oz denim Japanese denim in the world?
BRANDON: find that human beings in general are fascinated by superlatives. People obsess about the fastest car in the world, the tallest building ever built, or in this case, the heaviest denim ever created!
JGM:Which celebs have bought or have caught styling your denim?
BRANDON: I don’t know and I don’t care. In fact, even if I did know, I still wouldn’t tell you. I don’t want people to buy our jeans because they heard a celebrity wears them, I want people to love our jeans because they are the best and most innovative denim products on the market right now.
JGM: Do you remember the first pair of jeans you bought? Which were the most memorable and why?
BRANDON: I can’t remember the brand, but when I was in high-school (or for you Americans I think the equivalent would be middle-school?) I bought a pair of jeans that had a super long inseam. I really liked that as bunching up the jeans (called stacking) was fun and looked cool.
JGM: What is behind the title, NAKED AND FAMOUS? Who thought of that and why?
BRANDON: We created the name Naked & Famous Denim and the naked lady romance comic book style logo as Pop-Art satire of our celebrity obsessed society. We want to make fun of society for obsessing with products solely because they are celebrity endorsed.
JGM: Tell us more about the steel thread denim. who came up with that idea?
BRANDON: I saw a crazy coat from the designer Japanese brand Attachment, that contained a blended fabric of wool/cotton/silk and stainless steel. It was amazing so I figured we had better make a crazy jean with stainless steel yarn as well!
JGM: How many different kinds of cuts do you have of the denim? You have unique names for your cuts, what are they?
BRANDON: In mens we have 3 cuts… SkinnyGuy, which is a skinny straight cut with a long inseam. WeirdGuy, which is a gradual tapered leg with a lower rise. SlimGuy, which is a simple straight cut.
JGM: When did you start designing clothes and what was the first piece you made from hand?
BRANDON: N&F is the first collection that I have created which launched in Feb 2008. I do not personally make the jeans by hand, we have a factory with skilled and specialized employees who make our production. We will however have leather goods that are 100% handmade coming out next season!
JGM:What is in your closet now?
BRANDON: I just moved to a new place so truthfully nothing is in my closet now! All my stuff in waiting to be unpacked!

JGM: Who are some of your favorite designers? Do you have any favorites from your inner-circle?
BRANDON: My favourite new designer is a friend of mine named Sydney Mamane who has created a high-end contemporary line called KIN, which launched this season at Barneys New York and some other great stores. He does amazing suitings, shirts, coats and more. If I am a serious denim nerd, then Sydney is my ultimate tailor nerd!
JGM: How did it make you feel being in Vogue, ELLE, and GQ mag?
BRANDON: Getting editorial coverage is great. We don’t do any ads ever, so we need press to spread the word about our unique brand concept.
JGM: Did you ever style famous models?
BRANDON: One of my best friends Richie is our fit model. He is perfect for the job as he is exactly my size, except he has a bunch of muscles. So I can make all the samples in my size and then photograph them on him. I guess that doesn’t really answer your question though…
JGM: Have you ever collaborated of clothing projects with a certain individual?
BRANDON: Our first ever collaboration will be with cult Japanese denim brand MOMOTARO. Available Holiday 2010.
JGM: If you could choose anywhere in the world, where do you feel is the most stylish place?
BRANDON: Probably Tokyo. It’s like going a little bit into the future!
