Video: Moruf – “Darryl Strawberry”

Puttin’ on for the Garden State, Moruf presents his underground banger entitled “Darryl Strawberry” which is inspired by the historic baseball player Darryl Strawberry and also Bobby Brown, so you might see where he’s going with this. Moruf has been doing his thing on the indie hip hop scene between NY and NJ, letting the New York emcee’s know that Jersey is nothing to be slept on. The first time I’ve ever seen Moruf was in a lounge on Bowery in Soho called Katra, him and his homies (The NJ Klan) were pretty noticeable in there, they were pretty amped. This was the first time Moruf performed Darryl Strawberry in NY I believe, he had the unfamiliar crowd rockin’ to his lyrics and also participating with the chorus. He yelled out “Darryl Strawberry!” and the crowd replied “You could sniff it like Bobby!”, he had dope crowd control, that’s something true emcees should have.

In this day and age it seems like all you need is a dope video and a catchy chorus to succeed , in the 90′s it was way harder to get your music out. You wouldn’t even know if you were wak or not back then because there was no internet community to tell you if you were. And to get your video on the air you probably had to have an inside plug or would have to stalk the stations staff to get your shit out there. But this video and song right here definitely deserves to see air time. The scenes in this video have a nostalgic feel to it, says nothing but HIP HOP, takes you back to a time when dudes shot videos on their blocks in front of their stoops with all of their friends and family outside. Much props to the directors Temi Tokosi and Adam Saewitz. Enjoy!
