Afro-Punk Festival 2012
Events — By JGM Staff on June 11, 2012 at 2:43 amErykah Badu, Gym Class Heroes, Janelle Monae, Das Racist, Skindred, Toro Y Moi and Reggie Watts will all be performing at The Afro-punk Festival. Are you coming? The Brooklyn music festival returns for an 8th year August 25th-26th, after almost calling it quits since last year’s festival was cancelled due to Hurricane Irene.
Like previous, in addition to the Festival’s music component Nike will sponsor the largest street skate and BMX competition in NYC with the nation’s top amateurs being judged by professionals in their respective sport.
“Described by the New York Times as putting “rock and rebellion squarely in the category of African-American music,” the Afro-punk Festival has become a Brooklyn intuition, the focal point for the burgeoning Afro-punk movement. Over the past seven years, the festival has presented new artists before they hit it big, such as Grammy-nominated Santigold, The Noisettes and Janelle Monae. Afro-punk mainstays like Saul Williams, The Dirtbombs, and Dallas Austin have also graced Afro-punk’s stages.” -AP
The daily schedule hasn’t been released yet, but check with the official Afro Punk site for updates.
