Today is an important day in the New York City hip-hop underground. The young emcee Joey Bada$$ released his highly anticipated mixtape 1999 at noon and not surprisingly has thousands of downloads already. Joey Bada$$ and his group Progressive Era have been making waves in the hip-hop world since the debut of their video “Survival Tactics” which was then screened on MTV’s Rapfix for Odd Future. Since then their Youtube views are in the hundreds of thousands, they opened for Mac Miller, and now they will be performing at the Smokers Club Tour run by none other than Johnny Shipes. 1999 features beats by some of our favorite producers such as MF Doom and J Dilla while also displaying the talented producers within the group (specifically Chuck Strangers.) But most importantly 1999 shows the raw talent of one of Brooklyn’s most promising emcees in years. Welcome back Beast Coast!
