What is a photography reflector?

Photography reflectors are used to redirect or bounce light. Most of them are four by four and are mounted onto stands. They have two sides – a hard side, similar to a mirror, which reflects light in a bean, and a soft side, which looks like crumpled aluminum foil, which changes the hard light into soft. Reflectors come in two different colors (gold and silver) and each brings a unique variety of options to your photography studio.
- Silver. Silver reflectors give a neutral reflection, where the light reflected looks the same (same tone in terms of color temperature) as the light source. They’re basically mirrors, and are the more commonly used reflectors in the industry.
- Gold. Gold reflectors alter the tone created by light – they are frequently used with darker-skinned subjects. The yellow done is very warm and it looks nice. They are also used for creating a “sunset” or “sunrise” effect on subjects.

Why would I use photography reflectors?

There are several reasons that you could use photography reflectors.
- To manipulate light tones. If you are looking to change the tones that you have, you can add a gel. But why would you permanently alter the lights you use? Instead, take a gel and use it on the reflector instead. You lose a bit of light when you use this method (so don’t use it when it’s overcast). This can create some pretty interesting light tones.
- To alter light. Reflectors give the unique advantage of altering the light by merely being moved closer or further away, or by tilting them a certain way. Instead of manipulating the light, the reflectors can give you a variety of different poses that you wouldn’t be able to get with just a light. You can also cover the reflector with a net or other object to create different effects.
- To add depth to your light tones. Manipulating the photography reflectors can also help you to add depth to your light tones. Lights on their own are fine, but by taking a reflector, you can add different amount of depth to your light tones.

Overall, having photography reflectors is a great idea. In general, photography reflectors offer a flexibility that you would not be able to get with just your standard lights. They are an inexpensive way to create effects that you would only be able to get via Photoshop or other outside programs. Why take time to mess around with effects that you can get naturally? Sure, you still have to edit, but why edit stuff in that you can get while you’re taking the picture? Photography reflectors are easy to use, easy to store, and are a great addition to any photography studio.

This past Friday NYC’s Surprise Party saw it’s second anniversary at Tammany Hall. Founders Kev Storey & Jabari have been doing these random parties bi–monthly all around New York bringing out all types of party goer’s and socialites. This anniversary party was off the hook, they managed to pack out two floors with music blaring and beautiful women dancing. DJ’s Chuck Barret & Jerome Baker controlled the top floor while $1 Bin & DJ Will Gates crushed the bottom floor. Check out this awesome video from the party below.

The collaborative piece is a white tank top with photo-realistic pills printed all over the tank top using a spot process screen print method. This design is not used as a means to promote drugs, it was just the only way we saw fit to bring awareness and evoke conversation on the topic of drug use at electronic music festivals and for parents who would probably never have a conversation with their children about drug use to do so.
